Fascia is often thought of as the connective tissue just beneath the skin, but in reality, it is everywhere in the body. This continuous network of tissue surrounds and supports muscles, bones, nerves, blood vessels, and organs. It also plays an important role in the structures of the head, spine, pelvis and nervous system.

In the head and face, fascia wraps around muscles and surrounds the arteries, veins, and nerves that travel through these areas. Inside the skull, specialized connective tissue membranes form a protective system around the brain and continue down the spinal canal to the pelvis.

These membranes hold cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) — the clear fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. CSF acts as a natural shock absorber, helps keep the brain buoyant, maintains healthy pressure inside the skull, and supports the delivery of nutrients while clearing metabolic waste from the brain.

This fluid circulates in a gentle rhythm throughout the craniosacral system. When surrounding connective tissue becomes restricted — through injury, stress, or long-standing tension — it can limit the subtle movement of these membranes and the flow of this fluid. When this occurs, people may experience symptoms such as headaches, jaw tension, neck discomfort, or a general sense of pressure or fatigue.
